The Gulf of America isn’t just our neighbor—it’s your living laboratory. As the leading research university on the Gulf Coast, we give students unrivaled access to hands-on learning and exploration. Whether you’re conducting experiments in state-of-the-art labs, studying marine life aboard the R/V Jim Franks, mapping the seafloor with advanced sonar systems, or working at our coastal field stations in Gulfport and Ocean Springs, you’ll be immersed in real-world science from day one.
Boats
You may reserve our DMS small boats including The Skiff, GCGC, and Le Moyne.
Research Vessels
Find information on chartering larger boats including R/V Point Sur, R/V Gilbert R. Mason, R/V Ken Barbor, R/V Jim Franks, R/V Miss Peetsy B, and R/V Tommy Munro.
Within our R1 research enterprise, we maintain a robust and expansive presence that stretches across the entire breadth of the state's coastline.
Coastal Operations
At the forefront of our research endeavors in the Gulf of Mexico are multiple centers,
each playing a vital role in advancing our understanding of this unique ecosystem.
These centers include: the Center for Fisheries Research and Development, Gulf Coast
Research Laboratory, Gulf Coast Geospatial Center, Hydrographic Science Research Center,
Marine Education Center, Roger F. Wicker Center for Ocean Enterprise, and Thad Cochran
Marine Aquaculture Center.
See how they are leading research on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Other Centers
Beyond our coastal research initiatives, our school also houses the Center for Trace Analysis.
